In the late 1950s, times when children played outside during all non-schooltime daylight hours, my friend Betty Herrick and I roamed the Yarra river flats and billabongs of East Kew on our bicycles. This was well before the Eastern Freeway and the establishment of some of the golf courses.
We were on the lookout for horses, to feed them carrots and pretend that they were ours.
By the side of the Kew billabong, one damp, foggy morning, I passed my Girl Guide firelighting test. Here, I am also remembering the Wurundjeri people who camped and hunted along the river years before.
