My story about the Yarra River started many years ago, when I belonged to the Victorian National Parks Association. The group conducted outings they titled 'Walk, Talk and Gawk', where people walked through park areas and were educated about the local plants and trees, the birds and animals and something of the history of the area.
This panel depicts a short stretch of the Yarra at Warrandyte that I associate with gold mining as well as natural history. It is based on the Melway's representation of the area, but the blue of the river water is shaded with brown thread - it is the Yarra after all!
I have marked in red some of the walking tracks in the area. After 'walking and gawking' parts of the day, the group would share a picnic lunch and talk. The food always tasted so good in the open air, after some execise. And it still does; we have enjoyed many a picnic beside the river.
There are other things I associate with the river - the art and craft market, boats racing and white water, and even Don Burke filming his TV show!
The panel is worked in acrylic paints, with hand and machine embroidery, and some beading.
